I. IAS Exam Pattern – Preliminary Examination
Following are the features of the Preliminary examination:
- There will be two compulsory papers in the preliminary examination namely the General Ability test (GAT) and the Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) to test the analytical skills of the candidates.
- The papers will be objective in nature with multiple choice questions. Capable applicants will have to tick one from the 4 options provided there.
- There is also a provision of negative marking in this examination. it will be equal to 1/4th of mark allotted to a correct answer. However, there is no negative marking for the question left unanswered.
- The questions will be set in both Hindi and English language. However, questions relating to the English Language Comprehension skills of class 10th level will be tested through a passage from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.

II. IAS Exam Pattern for the Main Examination
Following are the main points for the Main Examination and
Interview:
- There will 02 types of Papers in the examination: Qualifying Papers and Papers to be counted for Merit formation.
- Applicants will have to participate in both the parts.
- Failing in the qualifying papers would lead to the canceling of the candidature of the aspirant.
- There will be 7 papers in the Main Examination as per the IAS Exam Pattern of 250 marks each. There will be 02 optional papers which the candidates would have to select. Check the complete list of the optional papers for the IAS Exam.
Qualifying Papers
Paper A: (One of the Indian
Language to be selected by the candidates from the Language included in the 6th
Schedule of the Constitution – 300 Marks. check here the list of the language

Paper B: English – 300
Marks
Note: The papers on the Indian Language and English (Paper A and
Paper B) will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of
qualifying nature. The marks obtained in the qualifying papers will not be
counted for Merit formation.

III: Personality
Test
Personality Test of 275 Marks will be taken of applicants
qualified in the Preliminary Examination. This would include the psychometric
Test, Assessment Test as well as the Personal Interview. The Marks obtained in
the Personality Test would be added in the calculation for the declaration of
the final Merit list.
